Roofing services

Roofing services in Glasgow & the west of Scotland

Roof Class Scotland is a family-run roofing company with 20+ years' experience. We work for homeowners across Glasgow, Ayrshire, Dunbartonshire, Argyll and Inverclyde. We repair roofs, fix and fit gutters, clean roofs and repair slate, and we replace a roof only when it really needs replacing.

01 · Roof repairs

Roof repairs in Glasgow

We repair tiled, slate and flat roofs, plus chimneys. That covers anything “from a couple of tiles needing replacing to a full brand new roof.”

Roof repair is the job we do most. A leak or a damp patch on a bedroom ceiling usually comes down to something small: a cracked slate, a slipped tile, lead flashing that has lifted or a chimney that is letting water in. We find the cause and fix it properly, so you aren't paying for a new roof you don't need.

What we repair

  • Slipped, cracked and missing slates
  • Broken and displaced roof tiles
  • Leaking flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks and chimney flashing
  • Lead flashing, valleys and abutments
  • Ridge and hip tiles
  • Storm damage
  • Damaged battens and roof timber

Call us if you notice: water stains on ceilings, daylight in the loft, slates or tiles in the garden, or damp around a chimney breast.

02 · Slate roofs

Slate roof repair, valleys and lead flashing

Many homes in Glasgow and Ayrshire have traditional slate roofs. Often they need careful repair rather than replacing.

Natural slate can last for generations. On an older roof, the slates themselves are often still sound. The trouble comes from the parts around them: the nails holding them rust, lead flashing tires, and valleys where two roof slopes meet fill with debris and start to leak. We replace the slates that have failed, renew the leadwork and rebuild valleys so the roof keeps shedding water.

Slate work we do

  • Replacing slipped, cracked or missing slates
  • New lead flashing around chimney stacks and against walls
  • Renewing slate roof valleys between pitched roofs
  • Ridge repairs on slate roofs
  • Repairs on period stone buildings and Victorian villas

03 · New roofs

New roofs: slate, tile and flat

We “will only recommend a new roof where absolutely necessary.”

When a roof is beyond sensible repair, we replace it in full with slate, tile or a new flat roof.

That might be because the slates are failing across the whole roof, the timbers underneath have rotted, or the roof has been patched so many times that more repairs would cost more than they save. If we think you need a new roof, we'll show you why before you agree to anything.

What goes into one of our new roofs

  • Old covering stripped and the roof timbers checked
  • Damaged timber replaced with new timber
  • Breathable roofing membrane laid over the rafters
  • Treated battens fixed to take the new covering
  • Eaves protection trays at the bottom edge of the roof
  • New slates or roof tiles, with lead flashing at chimneys and walls
  • All rubbish removed when the job is done

04 · Flat roofs

Flat roof repairs and garage roofs

We repair and replace flat roofs on extensions, dormers and garages.

Flat roofs fail differently from pitched ones. Water sits on the surface, so a small split, a lifted edge or a tired joint against a wall soon lets water through. We find where the water is getting in and either repair that area or put on a new flat roof if the old one has had its day.

05 · Guttering

Gutter installation, repair and sealing

Guttering is one of the jobs we do most often: new gutters fitted, old ones repaired, leaking joints resealed and blocked runs cleared.

Gutters that overflow or drip at the joints send water down your walls, into stonework and roughcast and towards your foundations. Over time that leads to damp inside. Often a reseal or a few new brackets will fix it. If the gutters are rusted through or sagging, a new run is the better buy.

Gutter work

  • New gutter installation
  • Gutter replacement
  • Gutter repairs and realigning
  • Gutter sealing with silicone at leaking joints
  • Gutter cleaning

At the eaves

  • Eaves protection trays fitted
  • Downpipes checked and cleared
  • Fascia boards behind the gutter checked

06 · Roof cleaning

Roof cleaning and moss removal

West of Scotland weather is ideal for moss and algae. Left alone, they can cause more than a stained roof.

Moss holds water against slates and tiles. It can lift them at the edges, and in winter that trapped water freezes and expands. When it washes down, it blocks gutters and downpipes, which is often why a gutter overflows. We clear moss and algae from slate and tiled roofs, clear the gutters afterwards, and point out any slates or flashing that need attention while we're up there.

  • Algae and lichen cleared from roof planes
  • Gutters and downpipes cleared of washed-down moss
  • Any damaged slates or tiles reported to you

07 · Inspections

Roof inspections, leak detection and maintenance

Sometimes you just need to know what's going on up there before a small problem becomes an expensive one.

Roof inspection

A proper look at slates or tiles, ridges, chimneys, flashing, valleys and gutters. It's useful before you buy a house, after a storm or before winter sets in.

Leak detection

Water travels before it shows on a ceiling. We trace it back to where it's actually getting in, so the repair is made in the right place.

Preventative maintenance

Small jobs done early, such as resetting a slipped slate, resealing a gutter joint or clearing a valley, stop much bigger repairs later.

08 · Roofline

Fascias and soffits: repair or replacement

The roofline boards along your eaves carry your gutters and keep weather and birds out of the roof space.

We repair existing fascias and soffits where the damage is local. If the boards are rotten or failing along the whole run, we replace the roofline completely. Because the gutters fix to the fascia, we often sort out the guttering at the same time, which saves taking it down twice.

  • Repairs to rotten or damaged fascia boards
  • Soffit repairs and replacement
  • Complete roofline replacement
  • Gutters refitted or renewed along the new roofline

09 · Walls & stonework

Roughcasting and sandstone work

As well as roofs, we cover “all aspects of roofing, roughcasting and sandstone”. That suits the many Glasgow and Clyde coast homes built in red and blond sandstone or finished in roughcast.

Cracked or blown roughcast and weathered stonework let water into walls in the same way a failing roof does. It makes sense to look at them together, especially where leaking gutters have been soaking the wall below.

10 · Building

Building work alongside your roof

We offer roofing, building and roughcasting services. That means the work around a roof job can be handled by the same team.

A roof job often turns up other work, such as a chimney that needs rebuilding or timber that needs replacing. Having one team for all of it keeps things simpler for you.

11 · Emergencies

Emergency roof repairs

Water coming through the ceiling, slates blown off in a storm, or a gutter hanging off the wall?

Our listings mention 24/7 emergency callout, and on Facebook we say we're available by phone 24 hours a day. In an emergency, the first job is to make the roof watertight and safe. Once the weather allows, we come back and do a proper repair.

Our office hours are 9am–3pm, Monday to Friday. For emergencies, we're available after hours by phone.

While you wait

  • Put a bucket under drips and move valuables away
  • If water is near light fittings, switch off that circuit at the fuse box
  • Don't go up on the roof yourself, especially in wind or rain

Materials

What goes on your roof

These are the materials that come up again and again in our quotes and invoices. Here's what each one does.

  • Natural slates
  • Roof tiles
  • Lead flashing
  • Breathable roofing membrane
  • Treated battens
  • Timber
  • Eaves protection trays
  • Silicone
Slates & roof tiles
The outer covering that sheds the rain. We match existing slates or tiles for repairs and lay new ones on a full roof.
Lead flashing
Seals the joints where the roof meets chimneys, walls and valleys. These are the places most leaks start.
Breathable membrane
A second line of defence under the slates. It stops water getting in while letting moisture out of the roof space, which helps prevent condensation.
Treated battens
The timber strips the slates or tiles hang on. They're treated so they resist rot.
Timber
Used to replace rotten rafters, sarking or roofline boards found during a job.
Eaves protection trays
Fitted at the bottom edge of the roof so water running down the membrane drains into the gutter, not onto the fascia.
Silicone
Used for sealing leaking gutter joints and small gaps.
